Major Characters :
Govind Patel is a typical guy-next-door who can be easily related to any average man. Although harboring a meager number of yearnings, he is engrossed with the things he desires. His primary goal is to set up a successful business which he thinks is his innate responsibility being a Gujarati. Omi and Ish are his two best allies. Govind plays the role of a skeptic unbeliever whose father had abdicated him and his mother, who runs a business of peddling home-mood eatables. To help her make ends meet, Govind conducted mathematical tutorials which he continued even after establishing a cricket supplies shop. Govind is also the narrator of the story and as the title suggests, makes “Three Mistakes”. In the course of the narration, Govind falls in love with Ishan’s sister Vidya who took private mathematical lessons from Govind. Being mathematically strong and of good business abilities, Govind was responsible for overlooking the financial aspects of the cricket shop he and his friends had set up.
Also known as Ish, he is a true patriot and an avid cricket fanatic. Being the cricket player in his school and colony, he named the business venture as “Team India Cricket Shop”. He assisted Govind’s business by conducting daily cricket tutorial events. Vidya is his younger sister who was always under a protective eye of Ishan. Ishan’s family lived simply and believed living inconspicuously. He finds a new passion when they discover a young and skilled batsman, Ali. To train and help him realize his potential, he determines himself to cross any line required. Due to his deep interest in cricket, he looked after the daily shop sales.
Omi is the only son of the priest of the city temple. His family had a respectable reputation throughout the city. Using the clout of Omi’s parents and uncle who owned a number of shops as a portion of the temple fund property, Omi and his friends acquire a shop to set up their business. He is unburdened by wit and was not very clever. Having very few dreams, he was quite health conscious. Omi was completely against the idea of following his father’s footsteps and being a priest. Being fairly religious, he liked to be a part of his uncle, Bittoo Mama’s twisted politics. However, Omi remains confused regarding his religious beliefs which were chiefly imbibed by his uncle.
She is Ish’s baby sister. Rebellious at heart, she intended to achieve freedom from the restrictions of her middle class family and narrow-minded society by leaving for Mumbai to pursue a course in public relations and allow herself to be self-dependent. However, she was weak and resilient towards mathematics which was the reason behind Ish asking Govind to tutor his sister. But in the course of the tutoring, they fall in love and develop a sexually intimate relationship which they knew would be frowned upon by their society. Omi, however, comes to know about their illicit relations and warns Govind of the consequences if Ish ever found out
He is one of the pupils who receive cricket training from Ish. He had a remarkable innate batting skill. However, he was physically weak, got exhausted quickly and was interested in playing with marbles. Although a follower of Islam, he respected Ishan like a disciple. Similar to Ishan, Ali is a patriot which can be easily seen when he denies an Australian scholarship offer because he wished to play for his country.
A member of Australia’s cricket team, he is a renowned fast bowler. He invites Govind, Ish and Omi along with Ali to meet him personally while they were in Goa to witness the India vs. Australia one-day match. Fred Li quickly recognizes Ali’s gifted skills and is willing to assist him to be trained in his Australia based cricket academy.
